How good sleep can help men’s fertility, and good health

Apart from the facts that sleep makes you feel better and boosts your mood, including pepping up your heart health, researchers say the right amount of sleep could actually promote men’s fertility.

Sleep boosts your mood

Recent research concludes that men seeking to have children must have adequate sleep; they say either of too little sleep or too much sleep is not healthy for a man. The findings made public at the annual conference of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine states that in a 12-month period inadequate sleep can reduce a man’s chances of impregnating his wife by as much as 42 percent.

Study author Lauren Wise, a professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Boston University’s School of Public Health stated that men who got about eight hours of sleep have better chance of getting their wives pregnant. Wise said, “Our results suggest that perhaps male fertility could be added to the list of positive health outcomes associated with getting a good night’s sleep.”

According to her this study would appear to be the first to comprehensively measure the relationship between a man’s sleep duration in relation to how it affects the ability of men to impregnate their wives.

Better sleep means quicker conception

790 couples, who were planning to get pregnant from all 50 states in the U.S including all 10 provinces in Canada, were recruited by the researchers for the project. Through an online survey the couples were made to answer series of questions concerning their sleep patterns and general lifestyle.

For a year researchers followed up on the couples to see how fast they would conceive. Men who were reported to have less than six hours of sleep a night, or nine or more hours a night, were 42 percent less likely to impregnate their partners in any given month compared with men who got about eight hours of sleep a night. And so we now know that possibly an underlying health problem or medical condition negatively affects both sleep and fertility, Wise stated.

 “We cannot rule out the possibility that other unmeasured factors explain our results, but we controlled for a wide range of variables measured in both the female and male partner,” she narrated.

The researchers wanted to know what the individuals knew about infertility, the sleep habits of the women, smoking history, alcohol use, stress, and physical activity. They also wanted to find out whether or not the man had had a child before, and how often the couples had sex, among other factors. Researchers discovered that even after controlling for all of those variables, the relationship between a man’s sleep habits and his chances of having children with his partner was still there.

Testosterone production requires good sleep
The researchers believe there is a connection between fertility and testosterone levels owing to the role sleep plays; Wise explains that it is an established fact that the majority of the testosterone men produce occurs in the course of sleep. “Sleep duration and quality are associated with testosterone levels, as well as semen quality,” she said.

Sleep boosts testosterone levels

In as much as testosterone has nothing to do with the results of this research, the scientists also pointed out that the man not getting enough sleep is never the only reason for him not getting his wife pregnant. On the other hand, they say it is also possible that a misaligned circadian rhythm (a biological daily cycle of activities in the man) could be responsible for the reduced fertility levels. It is important to note that some other recent studies have linked low semen quality with a disturbed circadian rhythm without any impact on the levels of testosterone.

The most important thing to take home here is the fact that any man wanting to get his wife pregnant should know that getting good sleep for the man especially could help in a very big way, apart from its other health benefits even for everybody for that matter.
