How to Cure Fibroids Naturally; the benefits of Ginger Root

Fibroids are benign tumours containing fibrous tissue and especially located in the uterus of the woman. They are therefore non-cancerous growths or tumours that sometimes also form outside the uterus, and usually during menstruation. They can be painful at times and causing heavy bleeding during menstruation but not usually life threatening.
Many at times women with fibroids who want to get rid of the problem resort to surgery, but scientific research has shown over time that invariably after spending so much money and going through the painful experience fibroids usually grow back with time. But modern research has also brought some bit of good news to this category of women in that nutrition and overall lifestyle changes have proven to be the best and even more lasting option.

Mediterranean Type Diet Fights Cardiovascular Disease; Helps You Live Longer, Healthier

As I delve into this topic I wish to make reference again to a previous discussion on eating and living healthy. It refers to the popular biblical story, when the four Hebrew boys vehemently refused to ‘partake of the King’s sumptuous meal’ – being made up of obviously assorted meat dripping with fat, etc, which contrast heavily with the Mediterranean type diet we shall be discussing. They instead requested to be served only fruits and vegetables, and nuts. And they excelled in ‘looking good’, we were told.
Olive oil - the central object of Mediterranean diet
Now, the Mediterranean is the largest inland sea; it lies between Europe and Africa, and Asia. The people living around this location are famous for their much admired (dietary) lifestyle. The people for one thing, have been known to live long and suffer rarely from some of the most dreaded and debilitating and sometimes terminal diseases we all know. Recently scientific researchers have begun to unearth some of the basic truths about the dietary habits of the people vis-à-vis how it shapes their overall health.

Birth/Population Control for Family Health, Checking Infant/Maternal Mortality in Nigeria

I just could not help going back to the headline as captured in the Guardian Newspaper recently regarding the issue of family planning and indeed population control. The annoying headline stated: ‘Civil society faults minister's stance on birth control.’ The civil society group - Project for Human Development (PHD) as led by its DG, one Engr. Jerry Okwuosa, to say the least, came down ferociously at the recent pronouncements of the Health Minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole who advocated increased use of contraception.

Balanced Diet: Making the Most of Natural Living in Wholesome Foods and Drinks

Balanced diet: That term has been with most of us right from when we knew how to read and write, I guess. You also know about nutritious diets. Perhaps the time has come when we will need to re-define the term ‘nutritious’. This has come to mean so many things to so many people, and almost everybody seems to define the term only according to their own whims. What about an ‘exceptionally nutritious meal’? In popular expression we would refer to exceptionally nutritious foods as very rich or sumptuous foods. But, what exactly does this mean; what should we be consuming and drinking?

The Importance of Exclusive Breastfeeding: Health of Baby, Mother and Nation

In the days of yore Africans were fully engaged in breastfeeding their newborns so they got the required nutrients and protection from their first diet. Even while growing up as a little child in the village I knew that this practice was almost like a full time career for nursing mothers who diligently fed their babies on breast milk. Some mothers however, due to perhaps lack of a cut out career, overdid the practice such that a little kid could go about playing in the neighbourhood, and suddenly come home to remove his mother’s breast from the bra and begin to suck! It was a common sight.

How to Protect Your Prostate, and Prevent Prostate Cancer through Natural Foods

The prostate gland which directly has to do with your ‘male organ’ is a very vital part of you as a man. The import of this gland is such that the prostate is a firm, partly muscular chestnut sized secretory organ that you possess for most of your reproductive prowess. It is located at the neck of the urethra and produces a viscid secretion that is the fluid part of your semen.

Your prostate for all intents and purposes needs proper care and protection; aside its reproductive functions, it is required that you protect your prostate for an awesome healthy masculine lifestyle.

Your prostate, your pride

And as the father of modern medicine - Hippocrates succinctly put it centuries ago (circa 460-377 BC), it is best you - let your food be your medicine, and your medicine, your food. Preventive health style as well as a natural approach to well-being has always been the best according to Dr. David B. Samadi, a board-certified urologist specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of urologic diseases, prostate cancer, kidney cancer and bladder cancer.

He says “everyday millions of men are taking multivitamins and prostate health supplements. However, natural food, fruits and vegetables, is still the best available option.” In this regard you are best advised to stick with the following prostate-friendly natural foods for your prostate health and for the prevention of prostate cancer.

Tomatoes
Tomatoes are richly packed with the very vital food nutrient, Lycopene that every man needs for their prostate health. Lycopene is a very important phytochemical; it is also the pigment that gives the tomato as well as other reddish or yellowish fruits their colour. Lycopene is essentially the carotenoid that makes tomatoes red; and research has proven that it is capable of lowering the risk of prostate cancer. Thus studies show that men who eat lots of either raw or cooked tomatoes/foods are able to live ‘healthier’ than those who do not.

Green Tea
Green tea contains a lot of antioxidants that are able to ward off free radicals in your vital parts and organs. Thus these substances are able to defend your system by inhibiting oxidation; antioxidants inhibit reactions promoted by oxygen or peroxides.

Green tea is a super drink for your prostate health

(Oily) Fish
Fish, especially oily fishes are very good for the state of your prostate as it were; fish oil is rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. These are forms of polyunsaturated fatty acids, and very healthy oils you need to consume on a regular basis; they are found in some of the best sources of fish oil, chiefly among them being – Salmon and other cold water fishes. Some of these other fish species include such as: sardines, herring, tuna, trout, mackerel, etc.

Eat plenty of fish diet for its oily benefits

Broccoli
Broccoli is a very rich exotic vegetable that is loaded with health rewarding phytochemicals such as sulforaphane, apart from its rich load of fibre. It is a cruciferous vegetable characterised by dense clusters of tight green flower buds. The phytochemical as found in any other cruciferous vegetables is capable of fighting off cancer cells or tumour growths experts say.

Soya beans
Soya beans as well are packed full with the necessary phyto-oestrogens your prostate requires to stay tip-top. The same active ingredients experts say are contained in other legumes such as lentils, peanuts (groundnuts) and beans.

Soya beans is a very good source of proteins, and prostate friendly

Pomegranate
Pomegranates are equally an exotic fruit; it is a large globular fruit having many seeds with juicy red pulp in a tough brownish-red rind. Pomegranate is packed full with antioxidants as well and as such very friendly to your prostate.

Laughter the Best Medicine - the many Health benefits of Positive Amusement

In Nigeria today laughter has somewhat become a high selling commodity perhaps due to the need to wade through the economic hard times. Laughter they say is the best medicine; you’d also have heard the saying – “laugh and grow fat”.

Yes, in the midst of the daunting challenges the average Nigerian goes through on a daily basis, he still manages to smile and laugh. Sometimes I believe that the average Nigerian has been coerced to develop even a morbid sense of humour as well all in the bid to pull through, which is rather a backlash of an abuse of the same ‘drug’ called laughter. Yet, laughing is one of the highly beneficial behaviours you can partake for yourself. But in utilising the healing ingredients inherent in laughter, it must be of a positive amusement. Scornful laughter never gives you any benefits health wise; healing is found only in a genuine hearty disposition.

Living Plants and the health Benefits of having plants in Your Environment

When I first moved into where I now live in Lagos it used to be a thing of joy strolling around the immediate vicinity in the cool of the evenings. My street was lined with pine trees that had weaver birds nestling all over it; the street was a natural, quiet and winding country lane where you enjoyed chirping bird songs, and the swaying pines amidst the evening breeze. Thus the shades the trees provided complimented the scenic beauty. But this was not to last for long because a ‘wealthy’ new neighbour soon moved into the environment and decided to cut down and uproot all the trees just because he needed to construct a perimeter fence around the piece of land and property he had acquired. But, he could easily have left the trees out, or included them in his plans!

Hernia: Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

Hernias are ruptures that occur in smooth muscle tissue, through which a bodily structure protrudes. They occur mostly around the abdominal sections; but hernias can actually arise in different parts of the body including – the thigh, bellybutton, and groin areas.

Types of hernia:
There are different types of hernia; it will surprise you also to know that babies can as well suffer from hernia. In the case of babies – it is usually visible in the tummy area - when the baby coughs or cries. A swelling appears and subsides in those instances. Hernias are usually appearing in the stomach area; sometimes you would also see them just above the navel while at other times they will occur around the groin region, or around the upper thigh.

Beekeeping and Honey Production - the Health & Sweet Rewards

It is funny, but in Nigeria if you announce yourself as one who keeps bees you are bound to get a strange look most of the time. Yes, the reality is that most Nigerians are yet to understand that beekeeping and honey production is just like any other occupation or business. This notion is worsened by the fact that some people have come to attach mysteries to bees – trust the overly religious Nigerian. But at the same time they’d love to have (original) honey for consumption.

The Benefits of Eating Fresh Foods, Fruits and Vegetables

In Nigeria it is a normal practice to cook food and store in the refrigerator so you do not need to cook every day. But this is even out of fashion these days because of the epileptic power supply in the country. And so what do you do? As a result people have now resorted even to a worse routine – heating up and re-heating food so it does not go sour. But this pattern only helps in killing off most of the vital nutrients especially vitamins and antioxidants that you require for healthy living. And then, we buy fruits and also store them on the shelf or locker. Expert nutritionists say this is no right either.

The effects of inflammation can be debilitating many at times; it is rather a phenomenon that can affect any part of the body. Basically inflammation is a response of body tissues to injury or irritation; it is usually characterised by pain and swelling and redness and heat. Depending on the reason for the onset of such reactions, an inflammatory condition is not one that should be allowed to persist unabated. Junk Food and the Negative Health Implications of Eating De-natured Foods

The junk food culture is just a modern craze that has come upon us all because of the unfortunate fallouts of urbanisation or modernisation. But can we actually help it? The answer is simple. We certainly have to do something about it. Junk food is generally food that tastes good but is high in calories and having little or no nutritional value. A research published in the journal Brain, Behaviour, and Immunity showed the following result: One week of consuming junk food was just more than enough to cause memory impairment in rats.

Lassa fever – Signs, Symptoms, and How to Prevent the Mouse Transmitted Disease

I remember vividly when I was a little boy; we used to play with house hold mice and even went as far as keeping one as a pet in the house! But as at this very moment, it is almost a taboo to even see a rat and let it live, let alone play with it. The world is changing fast and diseases are fast spreading, and even developing new resistances. The case of Lassa fever is a case in point in which every mouse has become a deadly suspect. Lassa fever is spread by the species of mouse known as the Natal multimammate mouse which is prevalent in most parts of West Africa.
The disease Lassa fever belongs to the group of Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers (VHFs); the ultramicroscopic infectious agent causing the disease belongs to the virus family known as Arenaviridae, it is also a single-stranded RNA virus and is zoonotic or animal-borne in nature.

The Dangers of Skin Lightening and the Risk of Internal Organ Failure, Cancer

Dermatologists have continued to warn Nigerians on the health risks posed by the use of dangerous and poisonous soaps and creams all in the name of skin lightening. According to Dr. Bola Ogunbiyi who is the President of Nigerian Association of Dermatology - Nigerians especially the ladies run the risk of permanent skin damage as well as internal organ destruction if they continue on this dangerous trend of bleaching themselves through the use of skin lightening creams and soaps.

How to Get Your Libido Back and Keep It through Proper Diet

By psychoanalysis, libido is a Freudian term for sexual urge or desire; it is a prominent aspect of physical attraction (for the opposite sex). As a man (or woman) your libido could be everything to you. So many relationships could, and have been very turbulent if your natural sexual drive or appetite is topsy-turvy or even in the worst case scenario, non-existent. Many have suffered long silently due to ignorance, but expert studies have proven that most of the time the right nutritional behaviour can very well be where your master stroke is hiding. And so you can rediscover your libido and even permanently keep it.

Rekindle the fire - change your diet. Photo credit: www.meekngentle.com
According to a health expert on Natural Healing Alternatives, Dr. Leye Popoola, the type of food consumed by men, and their health status can play a major role in their masculinity as well as in their sexual and reproductive health. It is important therefore to note that a man’s strength of sexuality is influenced directly or indirectly by the type of foods he eats; there is a great need for every man to ensure he gets the maximum benefits from his meals by consuming plenty of foods that contain muscle and blood building nutrients. This is where your ‘strength’ lies.
