The Importance of Antioxidants

Antioxidants are substances that inhibit oxidation or restrain the reactions promoted by oxygen or peroxides. These substances are very useful to the health of every human being in that they help to fight or dislodge free radicals that cause untold damages to the human system. For example, when you cut open an apple or a tuber of yam, it turns brown. This is oxidation taking place; when your skin is cut, it looks raw and becomes inflamed, etc. 

This same process happens in all manner of cells whether plants or animals including the ones inside our body. In the body free radicals are high-energy particles that run loose, bouncing on and off wildly and damaging cells. Luckily antioxidants are found in our foods; they are richly stuffed especially in a certain group of fresh fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants are the answers nature has provided in various quantities for us in our foods through vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, legumes. They are out to put a stop to oxidation.

Everyone and especially sufferers of hypertension and diabetes should never joke with foods that are rich in antioxidants. Thus foods rich in antioxidants are able to deal with the problems of arteriosclerosis or a disease of the arteries which manifest in the hardening of the arteries. This invariably means the clogging of the arterial walls. In this situation, the bad cholesterol (fat) is deposited on the arterial walls thereby inducing the heart to come under pressure because of the abnormal constriction of the blood vessels.

Grapefruit - a rich source of antioxidants

It is now an established fact that these free radical scavengers we call antioxidants are the best remedy for heart disease, high blood cholesterol, and even cancer. It is therefore most advisory for everyone to ensure they consume a lot of foods that are high in antioxidants. There are several sources of antioxidants and they are chiefly plant derivatives in the form of phytonutrients and, or plant chemicals such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Beta-Carotene. In recent times however, researchers have come to discover some other smaller but also very vital plant chemicals as powerful antioxidants apart from the afore-mentioned three popular categories. These are complex forms of antioxidants like – Quercetin, luteolin, hesperetin, catetchin, epicatechin, and epigallocetechin.

Vitamin C: Generally, citrus fruits are noted for their high content of vitamin C and consequently, possessing high caliber of antioxidants. Citrus fruits usually include fruits of the, as I would put it – Orange family; these are namely – Orange, Grape fruit, Lemon, Lime, Tangerine, and Tangelo. Apart from the citrus family, we also have in this category – Indian goose berry, strawberries, black currants, brussel sprouts, kiwi fruit, raw cabbage, green peppers, green leafy vegetables, potatoes, parsnip, and tomatoes.

LIVING FOODS: (You Are What You Eat)

At every point in time it has been resolved amongst health nutrition experts that you are what you eat. Your total well-being is invariably dependent on your nutritional life style or the lack of it. The Harmful Effects of Skin Bleaching

For years I have wondered why black women, especially in Africa and Nigeria in particular decide to alter their natural skin pigmentation. And then I concluded from my research that it must be a case of some sort of complex; it seems to me that so many black people and women in particular feel a sense of inferiority, and as such they would want to resort to bleaching their God given beautiful dark skin without minding the deadly consequences or attendant hazards.

The sorry side of the beginning of this ugly development is the fact that even ladies who hitherto were black beauties have on so many instances ended up becoming ugly owing to their ignorant and complex behavior that is hinged on colonial mind twist. Many women have continued to bring utter ruin to their looks and skin health through this degrading act of bleaching.

Very disappointing too is also the fact that even the fair skinned ladies also bleach! But you should know that whatever under which guise you hide to destroy your skin, call it toning or bleaching, they mean one and the same.

Mango Leaves for Diabetes Cure

I remember as a growing child that my mother used to prepare mango leaves, guava leaves and lemon grass. Sometimes she made the preparation with a combination of paw-paw leaves, and even the one we call Akwukwo akom, that is literally translated – malaria (herbal) leaves. This is the Neem tree leaves or Azadirachta indica. Sometimes you would refer to it as Dongo yaro that is if you are familiar with what the northerners call it in Nigeria.

These combinations were usually cooked and prepared as an infusion for all manner of fevers (malaria, yellow, dengue, etc.) and other ailments. Also, sometimes this concoction which many a times included mango leaves, would be delivered in the form of steam bath, for the purpose of inhalation and bodily assimilation, where the patient will be covered with a blanket while he inhales straight from the bucket of this steaming portion as it were. Or better still, you would take your bath with it. I am told that this form of practice is born out of what is called native intelligence. That is to say it has a lot to do with the human instinct and intuitive thinking, which invariably has never gone wrong with the (native) people.

And now, I have decided to extract just one ingredient from that lot – Mango Leaves to deal with.  Thus it will surprise you to discover that mango leaves of the popular and common mango tree have built into them a super load of curative powers and ingredients including extracts that have been found to influence the pancreas positively, and also having the ability to bring on a preventive power in retinal degeneration which is also one of the damages diabetes can wreak on the system of the sufferer.

Cucumber Healing Powers

Nature is very wise and generous at the same time in its equitable distribution of resources in times and seasons as well as geographical locations.
