Treating High Blood Pressure with Natural Remedies Such as Garlic, Apple, & Tomatoes

By now you must understand that the on-set of high blood pressure is brought about by the clogging of the walls of the (blood vessels) arteries. This blockage which is called plaque is a deposit of cholesterol which results in pressure being put on the heart as it pumps blood round your system. This is what later leads to high blood pressure and even heart disease. And the good news according to nutritional health experts is that high blood pressure or hypertension which is triggered by stress either emotional or physical can be well taken care of by natural approach through the use of appropriate healing foods, and also exercises.

Understanding and Treating High Blood Pressure Naturally

High Blood Pressure is well known these days as a widely spread non-infectious disease that affects both young and old and cutting across populations and races, including both the low and high strata in society.

High Blood Pressure as the name connotes is a disease brought on by the pressure impacted on the heart of the individual due to stress. Now, what is stress? Stress is another word for strain, pressure, or tension. This tension or strain is put on the heart which forces it to pump blood with extra vigour and thereby in turn putting a strain on this vital organ. How does stress bring about a strain on the heart and blood vessels?

As I go into this, I will like you to understand that in life stress is not all together a bad thing: stress makes us to be at alert; stress also makes us to achieve goals. But in life there are both good and negative stresses. The negative stress is the one that leads to one coming down with a disease such as high blood pressure. As the strain on the individual goes from positive to negative, ‘stress’ begins to build up. And as the negative strain persists for a period of time stretching beyond the individual’s capacity to cope, then a diseased condition might as a result just set in. This is high blood pressure situation.

You can fight off that stress

Again, let us now look at the intricate details of what goes on: At the onset of stress which by the way could either be due to emotional stress or physical stress, a panic measure by your body’s emergency  system is triggered off say in times of danger for instance  or any form of emotional disturbance. This trigger alarm signals from your brain – ‘shouting wolf’ as it were. The alarm tells your entire system of an imminent danger and your pumping adrenalin begins to race fiercely down your arteries.

At the instance of this, your body mechanisms gather (cholesterol) fat and deposit it at the walls or linings of the blood vessels as if to block off a city gate from an enemy attack. Apart from emotional stress, physical stressors that can precipitate high blood pressure can include – overweight, a high salt intake, diabetes, etc. But alas, when the danger is over it is already too late; the fat deposits are already in place, never to return to where they came from.

As we go on, I will also right here and now let you know that there is an alternative to treating or even preventing high blood pressure, to the well known pharmaceutical approach to treating and managing high blood pressure or hypertension for that matter. The popular dictum among orthodox medical practitioners is that hypertension has no cure. But I say to you – this is not true! High blood pressure or hypertension can be well prevented, managed, and even treated by the wise application of what nature has freely provided in fruits, vegetables and, or herbs, and positive mindedness, etc. Also, and very important, is that we all must have to adopt a life style (changes) behaviour or habit that promotes our health needs in this direction. By life style changes, I am referring to your nutritional behaviours as well as physical exercise.

How to Prevent and Deal with Colon Cancer Naturally

Exactly four years ago a very good friend of mine died of colon cancer and I was shocked and terribly saddened at the same time. My thoughts ran haywire because I found it difficult to come to terms with the fact that a young man of 41 as he was, would come down with such a deadly illness. What could be the cause of this colon cancer, and how can one deal with it? That was the question that continued to bug my mind since then.

In my research I have come to believe that the problem of colon cancer is not too different from the case of diabetes. I discovered that colon cancer also could be as a result of life style and dietary behaviours. And I tell you, the role of fibre in our foods is just immeasurable. Also, the damage that junk foods which include processed foods, and the unending range of unearthly coloured, tasting fizzy drinks out there remain unimaginable as well.

Broccoli - A strong anti-cancer food

When colon cancer attack sets in, it spreads so rapidly, and treatment is not very easy to cope with the deadly nature of the disease; its attack spreads mainly from the lining and glands of the large intestine and moving towards the rectum and to the entire body of the individual. In the case of Sylvester, he ‘grew old’ over night when the disease had already eaten him up before the doctors who had been wrongly treating him for pile later discovered he had colon cancer. My friend had been stooling blood.

How to prevent and deal with colon cancer naturally:

1. You should make sure you consume a great deal of whole foods or foods rich in natural fibre such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Your diet must never be completely devoid of any or a combination of these. Chiefly among these fibrous foods is broccoli which contains apart from its rich fibre, a lot of anti-cancer and anti-tumour properties also.

2. You must ensure a reduction in your consumption of red meat and processed (red) meat especially. Some of these types will include such as bacon, steak meat, harm, sausages, and beef in general.
 3. Be mindful also of the fact that too much of fat consumption especially animal fat can be very harmful to your system. Harmful fats encourage the development of the dangerous agents that give growth to colorectal cancer, such as bile acids that pile up in the cell lining of the colon when they break down these fats.

4. Empty your bowels regularly. You can achieve this all important action by increasing the bulk or roughage in your diet. This same fibre is well obtained from bulky foods like sweet potatoes. They contain high amount of vitamin C and E, pantothenic acid and manganese. I will even suggest you consume your sweet potatoes ‘whole’, that is – with its coat or covering on if need be. There is quite a lot to benefit from that. A good bowel movement at least once every day ensures that your body, especially the colon is free from absorbing back any poisons that may form in the system.

Natural Honey Eye Drop: Renewed Hope for Eye Diseases

Natural honey is fast gaining grounds as a remedy for almost all manner of ailments and this highly excites me. The reason for this is not far-fetched: honey is an all round natural antibiotic because of the immense load of anti-bacteria and healing agents that are present in this natural sweetener. Take for instance the fact that the pollen in honey contains all 22 amino acids, 28 minerals, 11 enzymes, 14 fatty acids, and 11 carbohydrates. The honey comb where the bee produces its honey is said to be about the safest of places, where no bacteria can ever dare to survive. Honey as an efficacious eye drop is the current great news.

Researchers at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia, are planning to add anti-bacterial medical honey in their clinical trials involving the use of honey as an eye drop. What has led to the effect and import of this is the frustrations that have been encountered by experts and patients in the use of traditional eye remedies such as eye drops, ointments, gels and steroids.

Another attraction for the inclusion of honey in the trending eye therapeutic approach is the disadvantages posed by the heavy chemical based forms of conventional eye medications that also tend to be resisted by the culprit bacteria in the cause of time.

And today honey in its very natural and raw form is becoming very popular for the treatment of various eye problems ranging from Dry ‘itchy’ Eye disease, Trachoma, Pink eye or Conjunctivitis which most people in Nigeria commonly refer to as Apollo, to even Glaucoma and Cataracts, etc. Apart from this presently growing resent medical discovery on honey, all through the ages natural honey has been employed in therapeutic remedies such as the treatment of mild bruises, cuts and abrasions, as well as simple allergies, common cold, etc. All of these are as a result of the fact that natural honey is packed full with anti-microbial properties.

Yes, it might sound very ancient a practice, but the ancients are a people also gifted with immense wisdom, or you may call it native intelligence as we say in Nigeria. But one of the greatest of the ancient Athenian (Greek) philosophers and pupil of Plato; teacher of Alexander the Great (384-322 BC) – Aristotle, once said “…honey is a good salve for sore eyes”.

Red Meat Increases Your Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Recent research findings have revealed how bacteria that inhabit your guts turn a nutrient found in red meat into metabolites. These are any substances that are involved in metabolism (either as a product of metabolism or as necessary for metabolism). What do metabolites do to your body? They are substances that are involved in the organic processes in cells and living organisms that are responsible for life; these substances are very likely to cause your system to develop a high risk for heart disease.

In a research led by Dr. Stanley Hazen, of Lerner Research Institute and the Miller Family Heart and Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic in the USA, scientists have shown that by this behaviour as exhibited in the afore mentioned studies, red meat can promote the development of atherosclerosis which is the hardening of the arteries. In other words the bacteria which are naturally present in the gut - which is actually your bowel, or the part of the alimentary canal which stretches from, and between the stomach and the anus, convert L-carnitine which is a nutrient loaded in red meat, into a compound called trimethylamine. This compound in turn is changed to a metabolite called trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO).

TMAO as a metabolite is what induces the development of atherosclerosis – a coronary artery disease. It is a stage of arteriosclerosis involving fatty deposits (atheromas) inside the arterial walls, thus narrowing the arteries. Even though the culprit in this issue happens to be the chemical compound L-carnitine, it is often widely known also that red meat has loaded in it dangerous saturated fat and harmful cholesterol. This is abundantly present is many forms of red meat such as steak, hamburger, lamb, etc. This increases your risk of heart disease. And so it will be advisable to go it easy on red meat in order to keep your heart.

However, according to a respected cardiologist and epidemiologist - Dr. Mozaffarian, the highest risks are in the consumption of certain types of red meat – processed meat. Examples of these are in the class of sausages, harm, bacon, salami.

This discovery has created a new awareness thereby boosting the already well known importance of useful natural bacteria that are found also in your system – that is to say probiotics. Probiotics are a group of beneficial bacteria found in the intestinal tract of healthy mammals; they are often considered to be plants, or as may be described by the term flora. Probiotics are also available today in the form of food supplements that you can easily purchase from your nearest health nutritionist shops for the purpose of improving your nutrient absorption, attaining immune system harmony as well as digestive system correction and perfection.

The Benefits of Dietary Fibre (on Diabetics)

By now you have realised the very and in fact critical importance of fibre or a high content of it in your diet. So many people have grown up with the misconception, or should I say myth of starchy or high carbohydrate foods regarding the lifestyle of the diabetic. Even for decades it has been erroneously advocated by the American Diabetes Association that high carbohydrate foods should be eliminated from the diet of the diabetes patient.

But like I have always stated in my articles regarding diabetes, and I will continue to emphasise that the problem has never been the issue of carbohydrates or even sweet foods per se. Rather, the problem is the issue of processed or refined carbohydrates and sugars! And so starchy or carbohydrate foods are indeed very essential to the body and indeed the diabetes patient. This is so because basic carbohydrate foods do contain the necessary fibre which is a vital ingredient in the prevention and also the treatment of diabetes. But when these carbohydrate foods go through the process of ‘refinement’, they are stripped bare of the all important food nutrients we refer to as fibre.

Whole grains

Fibre generally or roughage in any food variety will always go to aid your digestive tract to function maximally; it helps your digestion thereby preventing the deadly consequences of constipation, haemorrhoids, and elevated cholesterol, as well as sugar in the blood. Meanwhile we need to be careful not to take fibre in excess as it can also be harmful when you do that; but rather be sure to drink plenty of water as you increase your high fibre food consumption.
A high fibre diet is all important in this regard in that the more fibre the food contains, the more slowly the food is digested, and the more slowly the blood sugar will rise.

Dr. James W. Anderson of the University of Kentucky discovered in his research that the insulin dose required by the diabetic patient will be reduced by about 25%, and even in the long run there would be no need any longer for it to be given to the patient, neither would there be need for any diabetes medication of any form owing just to the regular consumption of high fibre diets.

The Importance of Antioxidants

Antioxidants are substances that inhibit oxidation or restrain the reactions promoted by oxygen or peroxides. These substances are very useful to the health of every human being in that they help to fight or dislodge free radicals that cause untold damages to the human system. For example, when you cut open an apple or a tuber of yam, it turns brown. This is oxidation taking place; when your skin is cut, it looks raw and becomes inflamed, etc.

This same process happens in all manner of cells whether plants or animals including the ones inside our body. In the body free radicals are high-energy particles that run loose, bouncing on and off wildly and damaging cells. Luckily antioxidants are found in our foods; they are richly stuffed especially in a certain group of fresh fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants are the answers nature has provided in various quantities for us in our foods through vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, legumes. They are out to put a stop to oxidation.

Everyone and especially sufferers of hypertension and diabetes should never joke with foods that are rich in antioxidants. Thus foods rich in antioxidants are able to deal with the problems of arteriosclerosis or a disease of the arteries which manifest in the hardening of the arteries. This invariably means the clogging of the arterial walls. In this situation, the bad cholesterol (fat) is deposited on the arterial walls thereby inducing the heart to come under pressure because of the abnormal constriction of the blood vessels.

Grapefruit - a rich source of antioxidants

It is now an established fact that these free radical scavengers we call antioxidants are the best remedy for heart disease, high blood cholesterol, and even cancer. It is therefore most advisory for everyone to ensure they consume a lot of foods that are high in antioxidants. There are several sources of antioxidants and they are chiefly plant derivatives in the form of phytonutrients and, or plant chemicals such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Beta-Carotene. In recent times however, researchers have come to discover some other smaller but also very vital plant chemicals as powerful antioxidants apart from the afore-mentioned three popular categories. These are complex forms of antioxidants like – Quercetin, luteolin, hesperetin, catetchin, epicatechin, and epigallocetechin.

Vitamin C: Generally, citrus fruits are noted for their high content of vitamin C and consequently, possessing high caliber of antioxidants. Citrus fruits usually include fruits of the, as I would put it – Orange family; these are namely – Orange, Grape fruit, Lemon, Lime, Tangerine, and Tangelo. Apart from the citrus family, we also have in this category – Indian goose berry, strawberries, black currants, brussel sprouts, kiwi fruit, raw cabbage, green peppers, green leafy vegetables, potatoes, parsnip, and tomatoes.

LIVING FOODS: (You Are What You Eat)

At every point in time it has been resolved amongst health nutrition experts that you are what you eat. Your total well-being is invariably dependent on your nutritional life style or the lack of it. It is not about starving yourself to keep fit; it is also not about whether you are eating little or much quantity of food, but the quality of what you eat and the basic nutritional value and content of what you put into your system is very vital to how your physical health, and even your emotional health tends to turn out. We all need to take what I will call living foods.

Hippocrates (circa 460-377 BC), the ancient Greek physician also known as the father of (modern) western medicine once said you should – ‘Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine, your food’. So, from centuries ago, it has been already established by health and nutritional experts that foods can never be totally supplemented or replaced by drugs in the scheme of things concerning our health and total well being. A lot of raw foods like fruits and vegetables eaten raw in addition to our regular cooked foods will go a long way. Living foods are medicine most of the time.

The import of this is that pharmaceutical drugs or synthetic medicament have always proven in the long run to be rather injurious to your overall system due to their chemical components. Hence sometimes these products are rightly labelled as poisons. Your food and drink is therefore the best and safest means of achieving healing and wellness especially in the long run. Here is your daily nutritional guide with attention to living food dietary habits:

1.    What you eat can either help you to maintain a proper and standard weight that is meant for you, while it can also make you to put on unnecessary weight. Therefore it is a fact of life that those seeking to gain weight or lose weight can simply achieve this by the nutritional choices that they make.

2.    It is very important to note that what you eat can lead you to developing diabetes while you can also enable your body to prevent or even fight this same disease if you have contracted it already. Thus your insulin production can be enabled by the virtue of making the right choice of foods and drinks. You can right away help your system in this direction by consuming foods that are rich in fibre all the time.

The Harmful Effects of Skin Bleaching

For years I have wondered why black women, especially in Africa and Nigeria in particular decide to alter their natural skin pigmentation. And then I concluded from my research that it must be a case of some sort of complex; it seems to me that so many black people and women in particular feel a sense of inferiority, and as such they would want to resort to bleaching their God given beautiful dark skin without minding the deadly consequences or attendant hazards.

The sorry side of the beginning of this ugly development is the fact that even ladies who hitherto were black beauties have on so many instances ended up becoming ugly owing to their ignorant and complex behavior that is hinged on colonial mind twist. Many women have continued to bring utter ruin to their looks and skin health through this degrading act of bleaching.

Effects of Bleaching
Very disappointing too is also the fact that even the fair skinned ladies also bleach! But you should know that whatever under which guise you hide to destroy your skin, call it toning or bleaching, they mean one and the same.

Mango Leaves for Diabetes Cure

I remember as a growing child that my mother used to prepare mango leaves, guava leaves and lemon grass. Sometimes she made the preparation with a combination of paw-paw leaves, and even the one we call Akwukwo akom, that is literally translated – malaria (herbal) leaves. This is the Neem tree leaves or Azadirachta indica. Sometimes you would refer to it as Dongo yaro that is if you are familiar with what the northerners call it in Nigeria.

These combinations were usually cooked and prepared as an infusion for all manner of fevers (malaria, yellow, dengue, etc.) and other ailments. Also, sometimes this concoction which many a times included mango leaves, would be delivered in the form of steam bath, for the purpose of inhalation and bodily assimilation, where the patient will be covered with a blanket while he inhales straight from the bucket of this steaming portion as it were. Or better still, you would take your bath with it. I am told that this form of practice is born out of what is called native intelligence. That is to say it has a lot to do with the human instinct and intuitive thinking, which invariably has never gone wrong with the (native) people.

And now, I have decided to extract just one ingredient from that lot – Mango Leaves to deal with.  Thus it will surprise you to discover that mango leaves of the popular and common mango tree have built into them a super load of curative powers and ingredients including extracts that have been found to influence the pancreas positively, and also having the ability to bring on a preventive power in retinal degeneration which is also one of the damages diabetes can wreak on the system of the sufferer.

Cucumber Healing Powers

Nature is very wise and generous at the same time in its equitable distribution of resources in times and seasons as well as geographical locations. This distribution of resources is inclusive of the natural remedies that present themselves in the forms of phytonutrients and adaptogens that are richly deposited in fruits and vegetables, and herbs in general.

Nature has so made it in a way that whatever is in season has been suited to take care of the situations at hand. And so whatever is in season you are to be wise to take full advantage of, for your total health and wellbeing. As every plant has been given for food, herb and medicine, each and every one has one remedial function or the other to perform. I present to you today the very juicy Cucumber which is capable of rejuvenating your whole being due to its load of anti-ageing properties. This vegetable is better eaten raw as most of the food nutrients contained in it such as potassium and phosphorus are lost in the process of cooking or heating.
Cucumber

Cucumber is loaded with minerals. You are therefore advised not to peel off the skin of this vegetable as much of the cell salts and vitamins are in and near to it. Cucumber is a valuable source of potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulphur, silicon, chlorine and fluorine. When cucumber is taken with other foods such as cereals, nuts, salads and fruits, it enhances the nutritional value of the diet. The curative attributes of cucumber are as you can see:

A natural Diuretic: The alkaline-forming minerals and the acid-forming minerals in cucumber are in the proportion of 64.05 per cent and 35.95 per cent respectively; this is what gives the vegetable its curative powers and makes it useful in maintaining the alkalinity of the blood. Cucumber constitutes itself by the reason of these properties, one of the best natural diuretics in that it tends to increase the flow of urine, which causes the body to get rid of excess water in the system.

The Healing Powers of Onion

The people of ancient Egypt had associated onions with eternity due to its unique healing potentials among other attributes. Even more so today this vegetable has continued to spring up amazing surprises due to the life saving properties that modern scientific research and discoveries have come to attach to it. Amongst nutritional and herbal experts, much consensus has been reached regarding the healing powers of onion just in the same way its relative in the vegetable-like herb in the Alliums family, Garlic has been regarded and esteemed.

Longevity: Scientific proofs abound showing that onions can actually promote longevity for the fact that it is capable of keeping cancer at bay. If your health is free of the the toxins and free radicals that can stimulate cancerous growths and dangerous tumours by the actions of the phytochemicals and phytonutrients in onions, you are bound to live longer.

Cancer fighter: It is evident from medical research that the more you eat this vegetable, the farther away all forms of cancer are from you; this is going by the studies carried out on people who frequently eat onions compared to those who are not in the habit of large and regular consumption of onions. The good news is that it is able to lower cancer risk including many types of tumours, even in the mouth, oesophagus, throat, breast, kidney, colon, and prostrate.

It is stated that the more pungent the taste of the onion the more potent it would be in fighting and lowering the risk of cancer, just as the varieties of red and yellow onions are said to contain more of the cancer fighting antioxidants in flavonoids. But the sweeter and lighter in colour the onion variety, then the lesser the concentration of flavonoids which carry the super antioxidants that are able to clear out free radicals from your system. You will also be doing your arteries a world of good when you become really friendly with your onions because you will be safe from the risk of hardening arteries – especially in the legs.

Bone health: Bone resorption which is a process by which bone is broken down, can lead to osteoporosis which occurs when bone resorption happens faster than bone formation. Osteoporosis being an abnormal loss of bony tissue resulting in fragile porous bones and attributable to a lack of calcium is most common in postmenopausal women.

The Healing Powers of Olive Oil

Olive Oil is first and foremost one of the numerous forms of edible oil; it is indeed a vegetable oil squeezed out of olive. Olive oil is not ‘anointing oil’ per se as most Nigerian religionists are wont to label it. But rather, olive oil is medicinal and has been used since ancient times in the treatment of ailments and for the promotion of general good health and wellbeing. Even in the Bible days, it has been known that apart from the natural and spiritual dynamic of olive and olive oil, it has been used medicinally due to its inherent healing properties.

Olive oil is the basis for the world acclaimed Mediterranean type diet. The import of this is that research has found that people who live around the Mediterranean Sea generally have a very stable health, free of most of the diseases and illnesses that afflict most of their counterparts in other parts of the world.

Olive oil

Also and very importantly, it has been proven that these same folks who live on this side of the globe generally have longer life span or longevity compared to the rest of the world. It is also true that the frequency of the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases, a major cause of death in the world today is rare, all owing to the habit or dietary life style of incorporating plenty of olive oil in their diet.

The crux of the matter is that extra-virgin olive oil is loaded with antioxidants and healthy fats, and stands out as about the best edible oil available to man; it is a typical example of monounsaturated oil which has an unparalleled measure of safety as well as healing benefits to the human system. Olive oil is mainly used in salad dressing and many other forms of dietary preparations.

Correcting Eating Disorders in Children

It could be a big problem getting kids to eat right; it is also very difficult at times trying to dissuade your kids from sticking to a particular kind of diet that they love. Naturally it may seem that children are usually wont to eat sweet foods all of the time. But I dare say this is just one of those myths about children and foods.

Sad news too is the fact that children willingly will not just go out of their way to eat or demand for fruits. Thus you could almost say to yourself – ‘I can just count the types of foods my kids love to eat, such as white bread, rice, eggs, spaghetti, macaroni, meat pie, burger, noodles’. Once the fruits are brought in, it is a no go area, they look the other way. Don’t even bother with salad. But you are to blame for all of these; it is the way you have brought them up.

Are you surprised that the kids readily jump at anything sweet. Oh! The sugary foods are just their favourites. The taste buds are like domestic animals – you can train and tame them from day one. Every child loves sugary drinks, ice cream, cakes, doughnuts, cookies, biscuits, sweets and so on. You were the one who thought that ‘Junior’ would not, or is not yet ready for gari or eba with ugu soup, amala and ewedu soup, fufu, fish and all the fruits that lie around.
You deprived your kid of the opportunity to start a new habit early in life thereby denying him the benefits of growing up enjoying the great advantages deposited in natural foods and home cooking.

Solution is in making sure that the kids are grounded early in life, that is - you laying the foundation of getting them oriented in sensible nutritious eating habit. And so, it is not also true that babies will only love to eat bland foods, but they will gladly gobble up all manner of mixed flavours you present to them. The secret is simply by starting them off on wholesome feeding very early on in life. Likewise, babies who are started off from the onset on sugary mixed foods will certainly grow up preferring sweet foods, while babies who were fed on a variety of diet such as fruits, vegetables, whole cereals, flavours and textures, will grow up enjoying a more varied diet.

Babies usually will take more time to process foods and varieties of them and so when he turns his head away, it does not necessarily mean he does not like the food. He needs time to familiarise with the (new) introduction. But just keep insisting, it will only take him some time, and he will eventually come to accept it.

Natural Arthritis Cure (3)

Healing Arthritis through Exercise: It is a well known fact that exercise will both prevent and even heal most of the debilitating and even terminal diseases that bedevil mankind today. Exercise will save you from Stress, Cancer, Heart disease, Diabetes, Hypertension, and also Arthritis; thus in the cause of exercise new cells are developed. While it is important to exercise yourself out of your problems such as arthritis, it is equally necessary to be careful not to overdo things. It must be stated here that some forms of exercise can actually worsen your arthritis while other forms will heal you.

Though exercise could be painful at times; but imagine the kind of grades your son will have in school if he did not study hard. Surely hard work pays handsomely; the discipline is all you need to be free of your arthritis, and exercise will surely help you prevent any form of degenerative disease including arthritis. I will also at this point advise that you do good to consult your personal doctor before embarking on your routine physical exercise especially if you are in doubt.
Arthritis pain
Exercise will enable your synovial fluid to properly lubricate the cartilage of your joints by moving in and out of the cartilage. Thus as a vehicle engine or machine requires lubrication, in the same manner does your cartilage require it as it keeps it healthy and moist. This activity will prevent your cartilage from drying and thinning out as we have seen in osteoarthritis due to friction leading to wear and tear.

As I have stated earlier article, overweight or obesity can be a danger signal to you developing osteoarthritis which has to do with the stress borne by your joints owing to your weight. Therefore if you are on this side, it becomes highly imperative that you lose weight, and exercise can very well enable you to shed that excess body weight and then maintain your ideal body weight. Your ideal body weight is according to your body mass index (BMI) which is a measure of your weight in relation to height, and is calculated thus: Multiply your weight in pounds and divide that by the square of your height in inches; overweight is a BMI greater than 25; obese is a BMI greater than 30.

Inflamed and swollen joints of the fingers

When you are ready to commence your routine exercise, be sure to start with aerobic exercises, and do workouts that is within your capacity. Do not overwork or stress your heart.  While you are at it, also make sure you drink plenty of water as a matter of daily (health) habit, because both exercise and good hydration are very important for the free movement of your synovial fluid which go in and out of (lubricates) the cartilage.

Natural Cures for Arthritis (2)

Having dealt with Rheumatoid Arthritis - an autoimmune disease in part one of this topic, we will now deal with the second popular grouping under which the ailment arthritis falls – Osteoarthritis. At this point it is important to note that at the extreme, arthritis could actually degenerate to a debilitating, even crippling disease. We all therefore need to take this matter very seriously experts warn.

And so on the other side of arthritis, Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear of your cartilage; at first it will seem to affect the patient on isolated joints on only one side of the body within the adult age group of 40 and above. It is a chronic breakdown of cartilage in the joints; the most common form of arthritis occurring usually after middle age. Discomfort might also be much sometimes, but usually will not be accompanied by swelling of joints. Distress will mostly be felt around the weight-bearing joints such as the hips and knees. Morning stiffness is usually very brief but not with general weakness as is the case with rheumatoid arthritis.

Natural Cures for Arthritis 1

Very often I have heard people complaining – ‘I have arthritis’, others will say ‘I have rheumatism’. And I have discovered that sometimes it is either of the two or both that they actually have. In as much as the fact remains that both rheumatism and arthritis are similar and related, there is still a marked or maybe, a thin line separating the two.

Arthritis however is defined as inflammation of a joint or joints, while Rheumatism is defined as any painful disorder of the joints or muscles, or connective tissues. It is also a chronic autoimmune disease with inflammation of the joints and marked deformities. Something (possibly a virus) triggers an attack on the synovium which is a thin membrane or tissue layer, by the immune system, which releases cytokines that stimulate an inflammatory reaction that can lead to the destruction of all components of the joint.

Thus both rheumatism and arthritis can be placed in the same class of inflammatory joint disease(s). It is a combination of these two conditions and the attendant symptoms that is referred to as Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Here, we refer to any of a large group of diseases characterized by abnormal functioning of the immune system that causes your immune system to produce antibodies against your own tissues.

And so I will be discussing these two jointly, and more, as we delve into the issues under the generic name – arthritis, and also proffer time tested remedies by the application of the most appropriate nutritional approach.  As we deal with this generic term Arthritis, we shall be looking at it in two classifications among its two major groupings: The first question for you would be – what kind of Arthritis is confronting you? And so it could either be Rheumatoid Arthritis or Osteoarthritis.

Curative actions of Cabbage

In this second part of looking at the many health and curative or healing benefits of cabbage, I will be breaking it down to some specific ailments that this wonder vegetable is able to perfectly bring under control. Cabbage has been used both clinically and domestically to achieve cures that are almost baffling; it is loaded with unique healing properties as well as phytonutrients that aid in muscle building and general cleansing.

Constipation:                                                                                                                         Cabbage is a very rich source of roughage which is a non-digestible part of the food and so would go to form bulk. It stimulates the intestines for a perfect bowel movement. You can prepare a complete meal of raw cabbage which is perfect for handling your constipation. When you do this, first chop the vegetable into very thin slices and add a little salt, including black pepper, and lemon juice to the cabbage. It will be well received and perfectly tolerated by your system without any adverse effects.

Stomach Ulcers:                                                                                                                            More than three decades ago, Garnet Cheyney (MD) of Stanford University, did considerable work on this and was able to administer cure to so many ulcer patients by just using raw cabbage juice. Research has shown that duodenal or stomach ulcers tend to respond with wonderful effect to treatment with raw cabbage juice. It has also long been used in traditional societies to remedy such and similar problems. The vegetable is said to contain an important anti-ulcer agent, vitamin U, which is easily destroyed by cooking.

The treatment is carried out by the patient taking between 90 – 180 gm of raw cabbage juice, three times daily, after which a regular meal should be eaten. To render the cabbage juice more palatable for consumption, you may need to add to it, pineapple juice, tomato juice, or citrus juice such as orange. You can also refrigerate this mixture so as to improve its flavor. However, it should not all be taken at once, but at many intervals throughout the day. Also, if you do not have access to a blender or juicer, or perhaps you do, but no power supply, you could still make do with chewing on a little portion of cabbage four to five times in the day.

Obesity:                                                                                                                                      Tartronic Acid, a highly potent phytonutrient has been discovered in recent research efforts to be highly present in cabbage. This substance plays a vital role in inhibiting the conversion of sugars and carbohydrates into fat and so it becomes a very practical and very effective way to handle problems of overweight. Thus taking a daily salad of cabbage would be an easy and painless way to stay trim and fit without any form of unnecessary harsh dieting exercise. It gives you a good feeling of fullness while your system tolerates and digests it very easily.

Skin Disorders:                                                                                                                       Cabbage has also been used in the treatment of various skin disorders by the careful application of the leaves: It is used in the form of compresses in the successful treatment of ulcers, infected sores, blisters and skin eruptions including psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease characterised by dry red patches covered with scales; it occurs especially on the scalp and ears and genitalia and the skin over bony prominences. Cabbage has been ably applied to effectively treat this very ailment, including others such as burns as well as carbuncles - an infection larger than a boil, and with several openings for discharge of pus.
It is the thickest and greenest outer leaves of the vegetable that are most effective when used as compresses.

This habit will usually reduce the occurrence of high blood pressure and heart disease. Start by being in tune with the rhythm of your heart - by listening to your own breathing. Take one deep breath and hold it there! While you are holding it, try firming up one group of muscles like the face, legs, arms, buttocks. Let out your breath, relaxing the tensed muscle group. Feel your tensions all melting away; drop your raised shoulders and rotate them in circular motion. Repeat this session, and watch your stress level dropping.
