Understanding and Treating High Blood Pressure Naturally

High Blood Pressure is well known these days as a widely spread non-infectious disease that affects both young and old and cutting across populations and races, including both the low and high strata in society.

High Blood Pressure as the name connotes is a disease brought on by the pressure impacted on the heart of the individual due to stress. Now, what is stress? Exactly four years ago a very good friend of mine died of colon cancer and I was shocked and terribly saddened at the same time. My thoughts ran haywire because I found it difficult to come to terms with the fact that a young man of 41 as he was, would come down with such a deadly illness. What could be the cause of this colon cancer, and how can one deal with it? That was the question that continued to bug my mind since then. 

In my research I have come to believe that the problem of colon cancer is not too different from the case of diabetes. I discovered that colon cancer also could be as a result of life style and dietary behaviours. And I tell you, the role of fibre in our foods is just immeasurable. Also, the damage that junk foods which include processed foods, and the unending range of unearthly coloured, tasting fizzy drinks out there remain unimaginable as well.

1. You should make sure you consume a great deal of whole foods or foods rich in natural fibre such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Your diet must never be completely devoid of any or a combination of these. Chiefly among these fibrous foods is broccoli which contains apart from its rich fibre, a lot of anti-cancer and anti-tumour properties also.

2. You must ensure a reduction in your consumption of red meat and processed (red) meat especially. Some of these types will include such as bacon, steak meat, harm, sausages, and beef in general.

Red Meat Increases Your Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Recent research findings have revealed how bacteria that inhabit your guts turn a nutrient found in red meat into metabolites. These are any substances that are involved in metabolism (either as a product of metabolism or as necessary for metabolism). What do metabolites do to your body? They are substances that are involved in the organic processes in cells and living organisms that are responsible for life; these substances are very likely to cause your system to develop a high risk for heart disease.

In a research led by Dr. Stanley Hazen, of Lerner Research Institute and the Miller Family Heart and Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic in the USA, scientists have shown that by this behaviour as exhibited in the afore mentioned studies, red meat can promote the development of atherosclerosis which is the hardening of the arteries. In other words the bacteria which are naturally present in the gut - which is actually your bowel, or the part of the alimentary canal which stretches from, and between the stomach and the anus, convert L-carnitine which is a nutrient loaded in red meat, into a compound called trimethylamine. This compound in turn is changed to a metabolite called trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO).

TMAO as a metabolite is what induces the development of atherosclerosis – a coronary artery disease. It is a stage of arteriosclerosis involving fatty deposits (atheromas) inside the arterial walls, thus narrowing the arteries. Even though the culprit in this issue happens to be the chemical compound L-carnitine, it is often widely known also that red meat has loaded in it dangerous saturated fat and harmful cholesterol. This is abundantly present is many forms of red meat such as steak, hamburger, lamb, etc. This increases your risk of heart disease. And so it will be advisable to go it easy on red meat in order to keep your heart.

The Benefits of Dietary Fibre (on Diabetics)

By now you have realised the very and in fact critical importance of fibre or a high content of it in your diet. So many people have grown up with the misconception, or should I say myth of starchy or high carbohydrate foods regarding the lifestyle of the diabetic. Even for decades it has been erroneously advocated by the American Diabetes Association that high carbohydrate foods should be eliminated from the diet of the diabetes patient.

But like I have always stated in my articles regarding diabetes, and I will continue to emphasise that the problem has never been the issue of carbohydrates or even sweet foods per se. Rather, the problem is the issue of processed or refined carbohydrates and sugars! And so starchy or carbohydrate foods are indeed very essential to the body and indeed the diabetes patient. This is so because basic carbohydrate foods do contain the necessary fibre which is a vital ingredient in the prevention and also the treatment of diabetes. But when these carbohydrate foods go through the process of ‘refinement’, they are stripped bare of the all important food nutrients we refer to as fibre.

Whole grains

Fibre generally or roughage in any food variety will always go to aid your digestive tract to function maximally; it helps your digestion thereby preventing the deadly consequences of constipation, haemorrhoids, and elevated cholesterol, as well as sugar in the blood. Meanwhile we need to be careful not to take fibre in excess as it can also be harmful when you do that; but rather be sure to drink plenty of water as you increase your high fibre food consumption.

The Importance of Antioxidants

Antioxidants are substances that inhibit oxidation or restrain the reactions promoted by oxygen or peroxides. These substances are very useful to the health of every human being in that they help to fight or dislodge free radicals that cause untold damages to the human system. For example, when you cut open an apple or a tuber of yam, it turns brown. This is oxidation taking place; when your skin is cut, it looks raw and becomes inflamed, etc.

The Harmful Effects of Skin Bleaching

For years I have wondered why black women, especially in Africa and Nigeria in particular decide to alter their natural skin pigmentation. And then I concluded from my research that it must be a case of some sort of complex; it seems to me that so many black people and women in particular feel a sense of inferiority, and as such they would want to resort to bleaching their God given beautiful dark skin without minding the deadly consequences or attendant hazards.

The sorry side of the beginning of this ugly development is the fact that even ladies who hitherto were black beauties have on so many instances ended up becoming ugly owing to their ignorant and complex behavior that is hinged on colonial mind twist. Mango Leaves for Diabetes Cure

I remember as a growing child that my mother used to prepare mango leaves, guava leaves and lemon grass. Sometimes she made the preparation with a combination of paw-paw leaves, and even the one we call Akwukwo akom, that is literally translated – malaria (herbal) leaves. This is the Neem tree leaves or Azadirachta indica. Sometimes you would refer to it as Dongo yaro that is if you are familiar with what the northerners call it in Nigeria.

These combinations were usually cooked and prepared as an infusion for all manner of fevers (malaria, yellow, dengue, etc.) and other ailments. Or better still, you would take your bath with it. I am told that this form of practice is born out of what is called native intelligence. That is to say it has a lot to do with the human instinct and intuitive thinking, which invariably has never gone wrong with the (native) people.

And now, I have decided to extract just one ingredient from that lot – Mango Leaves to deal with.  Thus it will surprise you to discover that mango leaves of the popular and common mango tree have built into them a super load of curative powers and ingredients including extracts that have been found to influence the pancreas positively, and also having the ability to bring on a preventive power in retinal degeneration which is also one of the damages diabetes can wreak on the system of the sufferer.

Cucumber Healing Powers

Correcting Eating Disorders in Children

It could be a big problem getting kids to eat right; it is also very difficult at times trying to dissuade your kids from sticking to a particular kind of diet that they love. Naturally it may seem that children are usually wont to eat sweet foods all of the time. But I dare say this is just one of those myths about children and foods.

Sad news too is the fact that children willingly will not just go out of their way to eat or demand for fruits. Thus you could almost say to yourself – ‘I can just count the types of foods my kids love to eat, such as white bread, rice, eggs, spaghetti, macaroni, meat pie, burger, noodles’. Once the fruits are brought in, it is a no go area, they look the other way. Don’t even bother with salad. But you are to blame for all of these; it is the way you have brought them up. 

Are you surprised that the kids readily jump at anything sweet. Oh! The sugary foods are just their favourites. The taste buds are like domestic animals – you can train and tame them from day one. Every child loves sugary drinks, ice cream, cakes, doughnuts, cookies, biscuits, sweets and so on. You were the one who thought that ‘Junior’ would not, or is not yet ready for gari or eba with ugu soup, amala and ewedu soup, fufu, fish and all the fruits that lie around.
You deprived your kid of the opportunity to start a new habit early in life thereby denying him the benefits of growing up enjoying the great advantages deposited in natural foods and home cooking.

Solution is in making sure that the kids are grounded early in life, that is - you laying the foundation of getting them oriented in sensible nutritious eating habit. And so, it is not also true that babies will only love to eat bland foods, but they will gladly gobble up all manner of mixed flavours you present to them. The secret is simply by starting them off on wholesome feeding very early on in life. Likewise, babies who are started off from the onset on sugary mixed foods will certainly grow up preferring sweet foods, while babies who were fed on a variety of diet such as fruits, vegetables, whole cereals, flavours and textures, will grow up enjoying a more varied diet.

Babies usually will take more time to process foods and varieties of them and so when he turns his head away, it does not necessarily mean he does not like the food. He needs time to familiarise with the (new) introduction. But just keep insisting, it will only take him some time, and he will eventually come to accept it.

While it is important to exercise yourself out of your problems such as arthritis, it is equally necessary to be careful not to overdo things. It must be stated here that some forms of exercise can actually worsen your arthritis while other forms will heal you. 

Though exercise could be painful at times; but imagine the kind of grades your son will have in school if he did not study hard. Surely hard work pays handsomely; the discipline is all you need to be free of your arthritis, and exercise will surely help you prevent any form of degenerative disease including arthritis. I will also at this point advise that you do good to consult your personal doctor before embarking on your routine physical exercise especially if you are in doubt.

Exercise will enable your synovial fluid to properly lubricate the cartilage of your joints by moving in and out of the cartilage. Thus as a vehicle engine or machine requires lubrication, in the same manner does your cartilage require it as it keeps it healthy and moist. This activity will prevent your cartilage from drying and thinning out as we have seen in osteoarthritis due to friction leading to wear and tear.

As I have stated earlier article, overweight or obesity can be a danger signal to you developing osteoarthritis which has to do with the stress borne by your joints owing to your weight. Therefore if you are on this side, it becomes highly imperative that you lose weight, and exercise can very well enable you to shed that excess body weight and then maintain your ideal body weight. Your ideal body weight is according to your body mass index (BMI) which is a measure of your weight in relation to height, and is calculated thus: Multiply your weight in pounds and divide that by the square of your height in inches; overweight is a BMI greater than 25; obese is a BMI greater than 30.

When you are ready to commence your routine exercise, be sure to start with aerobic exercises, and do workouts that is within your capacity. Do not overwork or stress your heart.  While you are at it, also make sure you drink plenty of water as a matter of daily (health) habit, because both exercise and good hydration are very important for the free movement of your synovial fluid which go in and out of (lubricates) the cartilage.

Natural Cures for Arthritis (2)

Having dealt with Rheumatoid Arthritis - an autoimmune disease in part one of this topic, we will now deal with the second popular grouping under which the ailment arthritis falls – Osteoarthritis. At this point it is important to note that at the extreme, arthritis could actually degenerate to a debilitating, even crippling disease. We all therefore need to take this matter very seriously experts warn. 

And so on the other side of arthritis, Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear of your cartilage; at first it will seem to affect the patient on isolated joints on only one side of the body within the adult age group of 40 and above. It is a chronic breakdown of cartilage in the joints; the most common form of arthritis occurring usually after middle age. Discomfort might also be much sometimes, but usually will not be accompanied by swelling of joints. Distress will mostly be felt around the weight-bearing joints such as the hips and knees. Morning stiffness is usually very brief but not with general weakness as is the case with rheumatoid arthritis.

Natural Cures for Arthritis 1

Very often I have heard people complaining – ‘I have arthritis’, others will say ‘I have rheumatism’. And I have discovered that sometimes it is either of the two or both that they actually have. In as much as the fact remains that both rheumatism and arthritis are similar and related, there is still a marked or maybe, a thin line separating the two.

Arthritis however is defined as inflammation of a joint or joints, while Rheumatism is defined as any painful disorder of the joints or muscles, or connective tissues. It is also a chronic autoimmune disease with inflammation of the joints and marked deformities. Something (possibly a virus) triggers an attack on the synovium which is a thin membrane or tissue layer, by the immune system, which releases cytokines that stimulate an inflammatory reaction that can lead to the destruction of all components of the joint.

Thus both rheumatism and arthritis can be placed in the same class of inflammatory joint disease(s). It is a combination of these two conditions and the attendant symptoms that is referred to as Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Here, we refer to any of a large group of diseases characterized by abnormal functioning of the immune system that causes your immune system to produce antibodies against your own tissues.

And so I will be discussing these two jointly, and more, as we delve into the issues under the generic name – arthritis, and also proffer time tested remedies by the application of the most appropriate nutritional approach.  As we deal with this generic term Arthritis, we shall be looking at it in two classifications among its two major groupings: The first question for you would be – what kind of Arthritis is confronting you? And so it could either be Rheumatoid Arthritis or Osteoarthritis.

Curative actions of Cabbage

In this second part of looking at the many health and curative or healing benefits of cabbage, I will be breaking it down to some specific ailments that this wonder vegetable is able to perfectly bring under control. Cabbage has been used both clinically and domestically to achieve cures that are almost baffling; it is loaded with unique healing properties as well as phytonutrients that aid in muscle building and general cleansing.

Constipation:                                                                                                                         Cabbage is a very rich source of roughage which is a non-digestible part of the food and so would go to form bulk. It stimulates the intestines for a perfect bowel movement. You can prepare a complete meal of raw cabbage which is perfect for handling your constipation. When you do this, first chop the vegetable into very thin slices and add a little salt, including black pepper, and lemon juice to the cabbage. It will be well received and perfectly tolerated by your system without any adverse effects.

Stomach Ulcers:                                                                                                                            More than three decades ago, Garnet Cheyney (MD) of Stanford University, did considerable work on this and was able to administer cure to so many ulcer patients by just using raw cabbage juice. Research has shown that duodenal or stomach ulcers tend to respond with wonderful effect to treatment with raw cabbage juice. It has also long been used in traditional societies to remedy such and similar problems. The vegetable is said to contain an important anti-ulcer agent, vitamin U, which is easily destroyed by cooking. 

The treatment is carried out by the patient taking between 90 – 180 gm of raw cabbage juice, three times daily, after which a regular meal should be eaten. To render the cabbage juice more palatable for consumption, you may need to add to it, pineapple juice, tomato juice, or citrus juice such as orange. You can also refrigerate this mixture so as to improve its flavor. However, it should not all be taken at once, but at many intervals throughout the day. Also, if you do not have access to a blender or juicer, or perhaps you do, but no power supply, you could still make do with chewing on a little portion of cabbage four to five times in the day.

Obesity:                                                                                                                                      Tartronic Acid, a highly potent phytonutrient has been discovered in recent research efforts to be highly present in cabbage. This substance plays a vital role in inhibiting the conversion of sugars and carbohydrates into fat and so it becomes a very practical and very effective way to handle problems of overweight. Thus taking a daily salad of cabbage would be an easy and painless way to stay trim and fit without any form of unnecessary harsh dieting exercise. It gives you a good feeling of fullness while your system tolerates and digests it very easily.

Skin Disorders:                                                                                                                       Cabbage has also been used in the treatment of various skin disorders by the careful application of the leaves: It is used in the form of compresses in the successful treatment of ulcers, infected sores, blisters and skin eruptions including psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease characterised by dry red patches covered with scales; it occurs especially on the scalp and ears and genitalia and the skin over bony prominences. Cabbage has been ably applied to effectively treat this very ailment, including others such as burns as well as carbuncles - an infection larger than a boil, and with several openings for discharge of pus.
It is the thickest and greenest outer leaves of the vegetable that are most effective when used as compresses.

The Healing Powers of Cabbage

Cabbage is a very popular vegetable that is eaten all over the world. It is a leafy vegetable that contains highly valuable food nutrients such as – high amount of minerals, vitamins and alkaline salts contents.
